The Ascendant
I debated on how I wanted to start this project, if it would be better to start at Aries being the beginning of the zodiac or my ascendant sign.
I decided to start at the ascendant as it is where the astrology chart begins. The ascendant sign in astrology is the sign that was touching the Eastern horizon the moment you were born. It is the mask that we wear, the first impression.
My ascendent is Libra so our first painting in this series will begin here.

Symbolism
The rose is split down the middle of the painting representing the balancing qualities of Libra. While working on this piece the idea of opposites came up a lot. The ruling planet for Libra is represented by Venus symbolized by the rose. One side perfect and beautiful, while the other dying and falling apart. The contrast between these two sides shows the pressure of maintaining appearances and the pain that can exist beneath them.
At the center is the wide open eye representing self-awareness, observation, and the way identity changes depending on who is looking. Every person that we meet will see us in a different light and we see each person in a different way as well.
Music F#/Gb
Songs:
Cellophane: FKA Twigs, Ocean Eyes: Billie Ellish, Skinny Love: Bon Iver, Liability: Lorde
The songs showed a deep emotional layer to the piece and brought me to the idea of can we be loved even at our worst. The idea of trying to hold yourself together while quietly unraveling underneath.
While listening to these songs a sense of being too much for others and not showing your true self out of fear of being too much came up. A sense of deep introspection as well.
Reflection
Libra is my ascendant sign but sits in my 12th house this makes it feel hidden, distant, and difficult to fully understand. While working on this piece sadness and uncertainty came up. The fear of not being able to do it and create artwork that felt deep and resonated with me.
How is your identity shaped by those that you are around?
What is the true you beneath all the masks and layers?
